What to know before you search

Check which kind of nonprofit is eligible. Grants.gov distinguishes nonprofits that have 501(c)(3) status with the IRS from nonprofits that do not. Some opportunities accept only one of these, and many exclude institutions of higher education, which have their own categories.

Federal awards come with requirements. Expect budget justifications, reporting, and possibly cost-sharing (the listing shows whether a match is required). Awards above certain thresholds can trigger audit requirements, so read the full announcement.

Register early. You will generally need an active SAM.gov registration (Unique Entity ID) and a Grants.gov account before you can submit. Registration is free and can take several weeks to complete.

How to use this directory

  1. Start with nonprofit-eligible opportunities and narrow by focus area.
  2. Use the deadline filter to find opportunities you can realistically prepare for.
  3. Read the agency's eligibility details, then apply through the official Grants.gov link.
