Government funding for businesses

Federal opportunities open to small businesses and for-profit organizations, pulled from Grants.gov and linked to the official listing. Most business-eligible federal grants fund specific work such as research and development, agriculture, energy, or workforce projects. They are rarely general-purpose start-up or operating money.

What to know before you search

Free “startup grants” are uncommon. Federal grants that list small businesses as eligible usually support a defined public purpose: research and innovation (for example SBIR/STTR solicitations), agricultural value-added projects, energy, export development, or training. Be wary of any website or caller that promises free government money for opening a business.

Many business programs are loans or tax incentives, not grants. The U.S. Small Business Administration mainly guarantees loans made by lenders and supports counseling through resource partners. Those programs are not listed on Grants.gov, so they do not appear in this directory yet. Visit SBA.gov loan programs for official information.

You will need registrations. Applying for federal awards generally requires an active registration in SAM.gov (which issues your Unique Entity ID) and a Grants.gov account. Registration is free — never pay a third party just to register.

How to use this directory

  1. Filter by business eligibility, then narrow by focus area or agency.
  2. Open a listing and read the eligibility details. “Small businesses” as an eligible category does not mean every small business qualifies.
  3. Follow the official Grants.gov link for the full announcement, required forms, and how to apply.
