How to spot and avoid grant scams

By Dave Espino · Updated October 27, 2026

Scammers use the promise of free government money to steal fees and personal information. Legitimate federal grants are announced publicly and are free to apply for.

Warning signs

  • You are told you have “qualified” for a grant you never applied for.
  • You are asked to pay a fee to receive a grant, or to provide bank login details.
  • The contact uses a non-government email address or pressures you to act immediately.

What to do

  • Find opportunities yourself through official sources like Grants.gov and the agency's own website.
  • Never share banking passwords or your Social Security number with someone offering a grant.
  • Review Grants.gov's grant fraud guidance.

Gov Funds Finder will never ask for your Social Security number or bank login, and we never claim to award or guarantee funding.
